Still around

Ahhh, I know it has been a LONG time since I have updated my personal blog page.  The good news is that the real page, StormChasingVideo.com which was my main master project is always being updated with new content.

So what have I been up to for this summer?  The northern plains chase season has been pretty much a bust which is ok by me.  It has given me time to reflect on life and work more on my company.  We (all of us) have been working on some great new exciting stuff for the later half of 2013 Hurricane and Winter seasons and the upcoming 2014 chase season.

Now what have I been doing with my summer?  I wish I could say I have been scuba diving a lot more then I have but life happens…  The good news is when I did get some diving in, all the working out I have been doing has paid off.  Since losing a lot of weight, the amount of weight I need in my dive belt has dropped big time.

Speaking of weight, here is a photo Neva took of me at the gym a while back.  Yes I am really lifting 1,200 lbs with my legs.  I guess you could say I’m in training for “Round Two”…

Doug Kiesling lifting 1,200 lbs with his legs

So with a lack of severe weather, I have been spending a lot of time at the gym getting back in shape and just overall having fun working out and hope to take on the Timber Dash 5K again this year.

Now back to the chase…  Here is what I have been working on for the last few months.

In June, there was a few storms that hit close to home.

6/21/2013 Starbuck, MN Flash Flooding Lightning
6/21/2013 Saint Cloud, MN Storm Damage
6/21/2013 Severe storms hit central Minnesota this evening.

Even the Aurora’s have been pretty slow this summer.  I have been able to see them only twice in June and not at all in July.  Here is the footage from late June near Alexandria. 6/29/2013 Alexandria, MN Auroras Borealis.

6/29/2013 Alexandria, MN Auroras Borealis

For almost a month, there was no weather happening, just cool and boring up north.  I got to the point where it was so cold that in the last week of July, over my birthday weekend, I actually shot some footage for TWC of it looking more like October in July in Minnesota.

7/26/2013 Ely, MN Feels Like October in July

One of the best parts of the trip up north this year to scout out locations was hanging out with Neva and not having to worry about work and the Alpine Slide.  Yeah I wiped out on the slide but it was still fun!

Lutsen Mountan Alpine Slide Crash Footage

So for my area, Minnesota pretty much went the whole month of July without any severe weather.  The next major severe storm was last week and that was just a hail event that I was able to avoid getting smashed up in and made it around the storm to a gas station just in time.

8/6/2013 Central MN Severe Hail

So what is in store for the next month?  More scuba diving where I hope the weather does not blow out the dive trip.  More chasing and getting the new full time chase truck up and running before winter.

What an insane past 35 days…

Yes, I have not updated my blog in a month.  I don’t know where to really begin so I will start with what is happening right now.  I’m sitting at the 58 Club in Champlin, MN waiting for my Juicy Lucy to cool down while sipping on a Pale Ale for a late dinner.

The proper way to eat a Juicy Lucy is to eat the fries first and to let the burger cool down.  If you don’t, you will end up with cheese running down the front of your shirt.

Ok enough about my dinner, this is not a Facebook or Twitter update.  I’m not going to talk about the recent tragedy in Oklahoma with my friends.  It is personal and hits too close to home for me.  This blog is about me and what I have been doing and since I have not updated my blog in over 30 days, lets take a look back over the last month.

On April 30th, after spending the morning at the gym, I drove home and saw smoke on the horizon.  Even after the extreme winter, the area was still recovering from the drought last year.  The grass from last summer and fall was extremely dry along Interstate 94 and finally caught fire.  The smoke was so thick that it caused travel to become to dangerous for travel.

4/30/2013 Saint Cloud, MN I94 WildFire

Footage was shot from the county road 136 bridge or Oak Grove Road SW, over Interstate 94 as the high winds and dry grass made the fire expand quickly along the east bound lanes of Interstate 94 towards the county road 75 exit ramp.

Just when I thought I was done with the winter weather and could transition into spring time chasing, old man winter had one last storm to hit me with.  I ended up heading down south, yes south, to cover the winter storm.

5/1/2013 Twin Cities South Metro Snow B-Roll

I spent the evening and overnight documenting the historic winter storm that hit the state.

Just to the south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul is a winter storm warning. The heavy snow start falling around 2:30 p.m. this afternoon and is now covering the grass on this first day of May, 2013.

Footage snow in Scott County just south of the metro area along interstate 35.

5/1/2013 Owatonna, MN Winter Storm

A powerful winter storm system is creating a heavy wet nightmare for drivers along Interstate 35 in southern Minnesota this evening.

The winter storm warning remains in effect until 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

Footage shot on Interstate 35 around the Owatonna, MN area where several inches of heavy wet snow have already fallen and accumulated on the grassy surfaces. The roadways have also cooled off to where they are also becoming covered in snow when it should be the middle of spring.

While Southern Minnesota was still digging out of the major snow storm, back home in Saint Cloud, the weather was almost picture perfect.  But the people driving recklessly in the construction zone on Interstate 94, that is always happening.

5/3/2013 Major crash shuts down Interstate 94 south of Saint Cloud, MN

With the very slow start to the chase season, I had some time to play around with my Aurora projects.  I made it up to Northern Minnesota to document the Auroras over a yet still frozen lake.

5/7/2013 Northern Lights over Leech Lake

Now the storm chasing season was heating up down south and I have been getting stuck at the office.  I did manage to make it out for the historic ice out event on Lake Milacs.

5/11/2013 Mille Lacs Lake Glacial Ice Aftermath

This was about the time that the severe weather started to go crazy.  From the middle of the month of May until today, it has been non stop work for me in the office with my expert crews out in the field chasing.  I could not be prouder of the team of freelance professional videographers that I have put together.  Between the live streaming setup and the news packages from everyone in the field, I was working at the office every day for the last three weeks.  Even my planned chase vacation was put on hold due to the need for me to be in the office.

Things have finally started to calm down but not by choice.  The last of the severe weather finalized last Friday with the tornado outbreak in Oklahoma.

On Friday night, after all the tornado footage had come in and I was busy working everything, we were treated to a unexpected show.  The auroras filled the sky over central Minnesota.

6/1/2013 Collegeville, MN Aurora Borealis Northern Lights

The strange thing was there was no CME, no source for the auroras, it was a strange rare but beautiful aurora event that nobody knew the source of.  Saturday night, we learned the fate of my friends.  I would just like to think that this was their way to say goodbyes since they knew I loved watching the auroras just as much as storm chasing the severe weather.

Well, the burger was great, but they are always the best at the 58 Club.  Time to make my way back home to Saint Cloud.

Wow, the month of April has been busy.

Wow, the month of April has been one busy one with a ton of weather that I have been working for StormChasingVideo.com along with my own footage.

The snow did not seem to want to end all April and we went from temps in the 20s to temps in the 70s within a few days and now the forecast shows we might be getting more snow later this week.

Here are the videos that I have shot over the last few weeks.  I am using the new Midland XTC HD camera with some of the footage in the winter storms with tracking the snow plows for some great snow plow shots.  Midland asked me to try out their camera and put it through some really nasty weather.  Well I did I have not destroyed the camera yet.

In the first video, I did not get this part on video but the mag mount on the side of the camera got knocked off the side of the truck and flew off into the snow and then the camera was hit by a snow plow that was moving along at 30mph and it survived being slammed into a MNDot Snow Plow.  The water proof case took a beating but the camera inside survived without a scratch.

Here is the video package from that day.  At the 5:50 time frame you can tell how the Midland XTC camera really made those tracking shots possible and look great.

4/14/2013 Interstate 94 & Barnesville, MN area Winter Storm B-Roll

It may be Spring but the west central and northwestern Minnesota are getting slammed with another brutal winter storm system..

A mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain fell over the area around Barnesville, MN which is in Clay County and just 22 miles southwest of the Fargo & Moorhead metro area.

This area was the focus due to a major wreck along Interstate 94 that shut the interstate down for most of the afternoon and into the evening.  Several tractor trailers hauling livestock crashed, along with several other vehicles just south of the Barnesville, MN area on Interstate 94.

The highest wind gusts that I recorded in the truck was 52.5 mph.

Total Run Time: 8:51

The next video package is from the 4/18/2013 Saint Cloud, MN Overnight Snow  storm.  I did not get a chance to use the XTC camera in this video since it was late at night and I needed to use the Pro Panasonic setup due to the low light.

4/18/2013 Saint Cloud, MN Overnight Snow

The winter weather continues to plague the upper Mississippi River Valley as another inch of heavy wet snow fell overnight on the city of Saint Cloud, MN. Footage shows heavy snow falling around downtown Saint Cloud and on the west side of town near 25th Avenue and 2nd Street.

The winter weather just kept hitting the area and I was able to use the XTC camera in this next video package that I shot,  4/18/2013 Stearns County, MN Winter Storm B-Roll.  The tracking shot is pretty crazy and I love being able to know where the camera is pointing and just focusing on driving now.

4/18/2013 Stearns County, MN Winter Storm B-Roll

Another powerful winter storm system is hitting central Minnesota hard again with more heavy snow and sleet.  A foot of snow is has fallen over the Stearns County, MN area around the city of Saint Cloud, Minnesota.

B-Roll footage shows the horrible driving conditions due to the heavy snow. The snow fall rates were over an inch and a half an hour at times.

Any vehicle that crashed on Interstate 94 and was not blocking the roadway was actually left on the side of the road  due to low visibility from the heavy snow making it too dangerous for tow truck crews to remove the vehicles until after the storm.

Just a couple more days have passed and you would think we would be in the middle of spring, but no, winter kept on hitting the area hard.  I did finally break the XTC camera housing while shooting this video.  The front lens of the housing got cracked while it was on the hood by some ice chunks flying off a semi truck in front of me.  The camera was not rolling at the time since I was waiting to get into heavy snow before turning it on.   The camera still works great, just waiting on a replacement housing.

4/22/2013 Twin Cities Area of Minnesota Winter Storm B Roll Footage

Everyone in the greater Twin Cities metro area of Minneapolis and Saint Paul metro area of Minnesota, and the rest of Minnesota is hoping that this is the final winter storm and final round of snow for the season.

A powerful winter storm dumped another half of a foot of heavy wet snow in the south metro area of Dakota County.

Even the crews at the Minneapolis International Airport had to go back to winter mode to de-ice airplanes this evening.

The last video for this update is the flooding around Sabin, MN.  The Buffalo River up near Sabin, MN is always the first to have major flooding before the water moves down or in this case, UP river since the rivers flow north up in that part of the country.

Well that is pretty much what I have been up to on my own video projects, go check out the videos on the blog for StormChasingVideo.com to see all the video stuff we have been working on.  Time for me to get some sleep and get ready for the next winter storm…  yes, there is a chance later in the week in the first week of May and don’t blame me for it, I just document the weather, I don’t make it happen.
